M-Sport’s Adrien Fourmaux has become the new British Rally champion after winning Rally Yorkshire.
Fourmaux won all five of the BRC events he started alongside Alexandre Coria in their Ford Fiesta Rally2, claiming the first overall championship title of his career.
Heading into Rally Yorkshire, only Scottish driver Garry Pearson and his former World Rally Championship co-driver Daniel Barritt could prevent Fourmaux and Coria from becoming the first Frenchmen to win the British title.
But Fourmaux, who is also competing in WRC2 this year, knew that a victory would guarantee him the same title his boss, Malcolm Wilson, won back in 1994.
Fastest on Friday night’s opener through the classic Dalby forest, albeit by just 1.4s over Pearson, Fourmaux pressed home his advantage on Saturday and wound up victorious, winning all six of the event’s stages.
Although there is one British championship round still to go, the Cambrian Rally, Fourmaux is set to miss it as it runs on the same weekend as the all-new Central European Rally in the WRC.
The 28-year-old is also set to compete in Rally Japan, but won’t make the trip to Rally Chile next week – instead commentating on the event for French TV.
