Toyota Gazoo Racing revealed its GR Corolla Rally Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon on Sunday.
The all-new car is the first official Corolla since Toyota departed the World Rally Championship with the 1999 manufacturers’ crown.
Toyota personnel remained tight-lipped about the precise purpose of the GR Corolla Rally Concept, which was driven by TGR chairman Akio Toyoda in Japan on Sunday.
DirtFish understands the car, which has completed initial roll-out testing, utilises GR Yaris Rally2 underpinnings and is aimed more towards domestic series.
Toyota has also used this week’s Auto Salon to confirm it will return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours after a six-year absence. The newly formed Toyota Gazoo Rookie Racing (TGRR) squad will run a GR Yaris race car developed with the direct automatic transmission, Toyoda completed some of the testing of the car last year.
There was similar excitement around the confirmation of the GR Yaris M Concept, bound for Japan’s Super Taikyu Series. The M stands for mid-mounted, referencing the location of the two-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine.
