In the year 2000, Subaru supremo David Richards stepped back from his role to concentrate on better the promotion of rallying globally.

Twenty-five years after the Prodrive man’s move, history is repeating itself.

Lance Smith – the owner of Vermont SportsCar which has masterminded Subaru Motorsports USA’s monopoly of rallying in the States – has established a new company, RallyForward, which hopes will take rallying… well, forward.

In an exclusive interview with David Evans, Smith explains what he feels he can offer the sport, where he feels rallying in the USA can improve, how he plans to bolster the top of the American rallying scene while not compromising the grassroots, the USA’s bid for a WRC calendar slot – and how that’ll work in conjunction with the ARA – as well as his own story and history as a co-driver and also in business.

But if there’s one takeaway statement, let it be this:

“I am going to prove rallying in America works. This will be a substantial championship that the world follows. That’s my goal.”
