When two drivers thought they’d won the Monte Carlo Rally

Tommi Mäkinen ultimately won the Monte in 2002, but Sébastien Loeb stood on the top step of the podium

It’s 2002.

Richard Burns is the reigning world champion, and he’s starting his first event for Peugeot. Everyone thought the court case that ensued as he departed Subaru would be it for the controversy.

Fast forward a few days, and the noticeboard in Rally HQ proved that to be wide of the mark.
Subaru’s Tommi Mäkinen drove through the flying finish, believing Monte Carlo Rally victory was his. Citroën’s Sébastien Loeb, somehow, did exactly the same thing.

The future nine-time world champion indeed was the one who stood on the top step of the podium, but the four-time champion was ultimately credited with victory.

This is the story of how then Subaru team manager, George Donaldson, helped uncover some sneaky tactics from Citroën, and he’s shared it on SPIN, The Rally Pod.
