Sesks assessing the value of his Rally1 campaigns

Mãrtiņš Sesks' World Rally Championship future is currently unclear

Mãrtiņš Sesks wants to be driving ‘something, ‘somwhere’ and ‘with someone’ in 2027.

But like many, the Latvian is staring down an uncertain future in the World Rally Championship.

With such big changes to the technical regulations looming – Rally1 cars will be pared back in-line with Rally2 from 2027 and a WRC Kit is available for Rally2 manufacturers to elevate cars to Rally1 status – and new constructors joining while other manufacturers step away, the driver market is in a state of flux.

Sesks shot onto the scene with two star performances in 2024 at Rally Poland and his home event in Latvia, helping him earn him two part-time programs with M-Sport for 2025 and 2026.

Last season was stronger than this, with Sesks scoring five stages instead of one, and nearly securing victory at Rally Saudi Arabia. Mechanical trouble denied a podium finish in Latvia, but Sesks nevertheless has failed to better the fifth place he scored on his Rally1 debut at Rally Poland 2024.

The 27-year-old will compete in the European Rally Championship this week in a bid to help MRF secure the teams’ title, but beyond that his future is undecided.

Sesks has 16 starts in a Rally1 car with a best finish of fifth

Sesks told DirtFish “it’s a bit too early to say” what his ideal plan is, but is eager to understand if his privately-funded Rally1 drives over recent seasons have been worthwhile.

“I just want to see the results of these two years, what we have done, and what, at the moment, teams and someone has to offer,” Sesks said.

“I just want to see if it has been worth it, to work these two and a half years to have some proper program and then we’ll see.”

Reflecting on a 2026 season in which he started six events and secured a best finish of seventh in Estonia, Sesks added: “Yeah, I think overall season has been troubled with a lot of things like that.

“If you look back, we haven’t had a single rally without any issues. OK, Finland was my fault, Estonia as well, but otherwise we’ve been fighting with a lot of issues overall.”
