British Rally Championship manager Iain Campbell has stressed “we still very much have a championship at this point” in the wake of the Irish Tarmac Championship’s cancellation.
The Ulster Rally was canceled on Monday, joining the West Cork Rally and Rally Tendring & Clacton in being called off due to the coronavirus pandemic with the fate of the Ypres and Galloway Hills rallies still unclear.
Despite a recent ruling from the Belgian government that prohibits ‘mass’ public events to run before August 31, an announcement from the Ypres organizer is expected later this week and is tipped to be positive.
“It is dangerous to assume, there is no announcement from Ypres at the moment,” Campbell told DirtFish.
“Currently we have five scoring rounds for BRC 2020. Originally it was going to be six scoring rounds, so we still very much have a championship at this point.
“As with absolutely everyone around the world we can only follow the instructions from the authorities and work with the legislation that prevails at the time. Everyone is working on their events and planning for the sport to return.”
So far this season only the Cambrian Rally has run, which reigning champion Matt Edwards won back in February.
Due to the loss of multiple events, the BRC’s reserve event option has already been exercised, with two rounds now held across Rally GB in late October.
DirtFish understands that if both Ypres and the Galloway Hills also fell by the wayside, then the BRC would not continue with just three points-scoring opportunities all in Wales.
