Esapekka Lappi’s Rally México was a real contrast.
From the highest of highs, leading record-holding México winner Sébastien Ogier on merit overnight on Friday, to the lowest of lows as it all came undone on Saturday’s first speed test, Hyundai team principal Cyril Abiteboul acknowledged that Lappi went from the best day of his career to his worst.
But did Lappi ever stand a chance of winning? Had he not crashed out and wiped out a power line, did he have it in him to defeat Ogier? Or was this always going to be Ogier’s rally?
