Anybody who knows me knows I have a real love of Porsches. I used to stand and wait at an intersection close to home when I was young. I knew the owner of a 911 and I knew what time they went and came home from work. Every day, I stared.
There’s always been something about the shape and, of course, that flat-six sound.
Well, time has very much moved on. I’m fortunate enough to own some Porsches now and when the opportunity came for this very special 964 RSR, I was definitely interested.
That interest deepened when I understood the car would come with 500bhp. And I was sold when I was told it would be powered by a 63kWh battery pack.
I know what you’re thinking: what about the rasp and the roar?
Well, this is an opportunity to do something completely different. I’ve always appreciated the era of the 964, but I’ve always been aware that we must have an eye to tomorrow – to build a bridge to the cars and motorsport for the future. This is a way of doing that. This is a car I know my children will be using well into the next generation.
We’re all very well aware of the period of great change both the automotive industry and motorsport itself sits in right now. Just this summer we saw double world champion Carlos Sainz in London helping to usher in the next chapter for Extreme E, which becomes Extreme H – with hydrogen power next season. The World Rally Championship itself stands at a crossroads with the potential for electric, hybrid, internal combustion and hydrogen power from 2027 onwards.
It’s definitely the right time to be experimenting and looking at different solutions for a sustainable future. That was one of the reasons I reached out to Everrati.
I’d seen some of their work on electrifying some incredible classic cars like the Range Rovers and Land Rovers, even a GT40. When I talked to the team, I asked if they could work their magic on a Porsche like this one – they were confident they could deliver.
And they most certainly have. Everrati has future-proofed one of the most iconic Porsches in the most spectacular fashion. The car drives beautifully, with the weight distribution balanced to match the original car, but it does so with zero emissions.
I love the detail in the car, the attention to the carbon-fiber bodywork on the classic wide body. Everrati has worked so hard to replicate everything that was great in the original car, while building in some incredible technology which carries this 911 very firmly into the future.
It’s a totally usable daily drive – it even comes with Apple CarPlay, so the family can still tell me what music I should be listening to!
Congratulations to the team at Everrati, this 964 is absolutely stunning – certainly the kind of car which would have caught my younger eye while I stood waiting for the bus to college.
