When Ford launched its original Escort RS Turbo, it was white. And very, very hot; hence the blue oval’s deployment of the ‘White Hot’ tag line in its advertising.
The all-white thing changed in 1985 when Ford prepared a very special Escort RS Turbo for a very special customer: Princess Diana. While she must have been keen to see 60mph from standstill in eight seconds (with the potential for a top speed of 127mph) she was less keen on the attention the car created in its original form. So, Ford was asked to modify the grill and deliver it in black – complete with a secondary rear-view mirror for her security detail.
Princess Diana’s car was a Series 1 Escort RS Turbo. What we have here is a Series 2, a younger Mk4 rather than Mk3 Escort, which looks absolutely stunning in black, with red detailing.
Inside and out, this Spanish-registered left-hand drive Escort is stunning – with the original radio-cassette option upgraded to feature a Compact Disc player. And when you want a more natural sound, engine-wise you’ll be using a fuel-injected, 1600cc, Garrett AiResearch T3 turbo-charged motor. The original Recaro seats will keep you comfortable while the five-speed manual gearbox transmits 132bhp to the front wheels to keep you fully engaged in the driving experience.
