The stage-to-road story is a well-trodden path. Most recently, it’s been a Rovanperä or Ogier beefed-up-and-badged Toyota GR Yaris – the World Rally Championship has provided fertile ground for such projects.
Dakar? Less so. Until now.
Defender’s arrival in the World Rally-Raid Championship couldn’t have been more successful, with a Dakar 1-2 for Rokas Baciuška and Sara Price followed by a brace of podium lock outs for the D7X-R in Portugal and Argentina.
Taking the ruthlessly capable OCTA base car to one of the world’s most renowned preparation firms in Prodrive delivered the only product capable of bringing Mr Dakar himself Stéphane Peterhansel out of retirement.
“Defender,” Peterhansel told DirtFish, “is the only car I would come back to Dakar for. I love this brand.”
The 14-time Dakar winner is – and always has been – a proud Land Rover owner. And now he has the chance to turn his beloved race car into a daily driver.
Five years on from its return to the US market – and more than 130,000 sales later – Defender revealed Defender Dakar, a Design Preview Model, at The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering, in California as part of Monterey Car Week. The Quail by the Peninsula, provided the ideal setting for an exclusive preview of the new car, sitting alongside historic Heritage Defenders and the Stock class-winning Defender D7X-R Dakar Rally.
The race car for the road will retain the D7x body architecture, transmission and driveline of the D7X-R competition car, all of which is based on the Defender OCTA. Unrestricted by race regulations, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 will deliver 635PS and 750Nm of torque.
You’ll be connected to the road by a 35-inch tire package, with Advanced All-Terrain Tires on forged 20-inch wheels, alongside coil suspension with motorsport-proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers, new Dunes and Gravel Drive modes.
And, should you take to the air, fear not Defender has you covered with the revolutionary Flight Mode, originally developed for the race car to ensure smooth landings after the biggest of dune jumps.
The outside reflects the car’s competition provenance, with roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon fibre raised air intakes, carbon fibre bonnet, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps. An enhanced metal front undershield and underbody protection complete the race-inspired specification.
Defender managing director Mark Cameron said: “We’ve pushed our engineers to go further than they’ve ever gone before. First, we evolved Defender OCTA into D7X-R and then we asked: Could we make the Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R road legal? The result is the Defender Dakar.
“It’s the ultimate expression of adventure and is a true reflection of how we embrace the impossible. It embodies not only the spirit of the Defender Rally team but our continued and historic legacy of off-road innovation. This limited-run model will showcase everything we’ve learned in some of the toughest environments and most competitive conditions imaginable. An authentic Defender, made from unstoppable DNA.”
Registrations of interest in the limited-run Defender Dakar (which is available in Narvik Black and Alaska White… but if you go for anything other than the signature Dakar Sand Body and Yanbu Turquoise roof, you’ve got it all wrong) are now being collated and will be available to reserve from early 2027. Further details and specifications will be revealed at January’s Dakar Rally.
