My first ever editor, Simon Arron, made it clear to me the day I walked through the door at Motoring News: we’re enthusiasts first and journalists second. How right he was.
Luke Barry didn’t need telling that when he walked into DirtFish Media. He’s both. He’s the most enthusiastic journalist I’ve ever met – which is why we had no hesitation in promoting him to editor.
Luke has an exceptional eye for a story, a rabid attention to detail and a moderate amount of talent behind the wheel – as he displayed when he showed our chief instructor Nate Tennis how to drive a Subaru BRZ at the Fish earlier this year. Hang on, I might have got that last bit the wrong way around…
From his head to his toes, Luke’s a rally man and a rally fan. He has a thirst for rallying’s history as well as a firm grasp on the politics which have shaped and will shape our sport’s future. More importantly, arguably, he has an opinion. He can argue for the F2 Kit Car era in the British Rally Championship as strongly as he can argue against the need for safety crews on a gravel round of the World Rally Championship.
The world over, DirtFish is the go-to place for anything and everything off-road in motorsport and to be at the wheel of such a sublime vehicle for information is something very, very special.
Congratulations Luke, you’ve earned this. Now live it. As an enthusiast and a journalist.
Before I go, there’s one more important point to make: Luke’s elevation to the captain’s role means we have an opening on the team.
Having got this far in this story, have you just thought to yourself: ‘Everything he’s said about Luke, he could be talking about me…’
If the answer to that is yes, get in touch.
