It was a long, lazy yawn. The sort of yawn associated with the mid-day heat of Great Rift Valley spring Saturday. The lion was in no hurry.
The rush? That was all on us. In every sense.
Pushing the button in the backpack fired power into the Prism. The Teradek screen blinked, registering its readiness to connect our eyes with the rest of the world. Knowing glances were passed as DirtFish’s Brenten Kelly held up his hand, fingers spread to silently indicate we were live in five.
Right at the wrong moment, another big cat stole the show: Grégoire Munster’s Ford Puma Rally1 arrived on the scene. Fresh from tearing up the Hell’s Gate stage of the Safari Rally, the million-dollar car pulled over and was immediately lost in its own cloud of dusty fech fech.
Emerging from the car, Munster used the sleeve of his overalls to wipe the sweat from his eyes, simultaneously smearing grime across his forehead. Nodding at the kit, he smiled.
“Not so easy here…” he said, waving an arm around his head to indicate the absolute vastness of the surrounding savanna.
“Actually,” replied Kelly, “we’re already live.”
Live without the lion, but Kenya’s Safari Rally week is the one time when the big five take a back seat in favor of the world’s fastest cars and drivers. DirtFish is on the scene to take that show to planet earth’s four corners.
Here and now, connectivity-wise, there’s nothing. The Puma’s hooked up to the team via an overflying repeater plane, but still DirtFish is spreading the word.
On Kelly’s back sits a regular-looking backpack – a couple of days into life in the middle of nowhere and the dirt has painted it a sandier shade of black. It doesn’t matter. The four high-performance 5G Node modems combined with high-gain antennas are delivering extraordinary speed.
It's all in the backpack. Teradek know-how is changing the game for DirtFish and live broadcasting
