Former Citroën World Rally Championship driver Stéphane Lefebvre will compete in the British Rally Championship instead of the Belgian Rally Championship on the Ypres Rally later this month.
Lefebvre, the reigning Belgian champion, hasn’t competed in Belgium this season, instead focusing his efforts on rallies back home in France.
But the 31-year-old will take on Ypres – an event he won the WRC2 class in last year when it was a round of the World Rally Championship – in a C3 Rally2 later this month (June 22-24).
However, Lefebvre has taken the unusual step of registering for the British championship, and not the Belgian one.
He explained: “I have good news to announce my participation in the eighth round of the Belgian Rally Championship.
“At the wheel of the DG Sport Citroën C3 Rally2, we will do everything to write our names on the top line of this prestigious event.
“In order to not influence the Belgian championship, we will only be registered in the British championship.”
Ypres is round three of this year’s British series, which has so far been dominated by M-Sport factory driver Adrien Fourmaux.
Alongside Lefebvre and Fourmaux, 11-time Ypres Rally winner Freddy Loix and 2019 European Rally champion Chris Ingram are among the favorites for victory, as well as a host of Belgian experts including runaway championship leader Maxime Potty.
