The organizers of Rally Costa Brava have told DirtFish the FIA’s decision not to allocate points for this week’s Girona-based event is a fair one.
The Spanish historic rally found itself at odds with the governing body of world motorsport after deciding not to allow Italian crews or teams to compete on the FIA European Historic Sporting Rally Championship round.
A spokesman from this week’s event told DirtFish: “As organizers we just follow instructions coming from OMS (World Health Organization), the Spanish Government, the Catalan Government, the FIA and the RFEDA (Spanish federation).
“It’s difficult to find any perfect solution, [which is] fair for everybody. We have nothing against the Italians, we are really good friends with many of them.
“It’s a difficult situation and we try to save the event, the oldest rally in Spain, with more than 150 teams coming from many countries. The decision from FIA and RFEDA affects us, but it’s fair for the Italians. FIA decision was to do the event without giving points for the championship, so we accept.”
More rallies are expected to be cancelled or postponed in Italy and around Europe due to the continued spread of coronavirus.
