Dorothy Caldwell, holder of the Guinness World Record for the oldest rally co-driver/navigator, has passed away at the age of 103.

Mother of former McLaren Formula 1 team manager Alastair Caldwell and born in 1918, it took until Dorothy was 94 before she took to co-driving, but she was still active in rallying four years later.

She exclusively co-drove for her son, who has spent the last decade competing in classic rallies across the world. At first it was smaller road rallies, but with the pair seeking adventure they then set off for cross-continental rallies, amassing thousands of miles in Asia and North America as well as in New Zealand, where Dorothy spent the vast majority of her life.

Born in Britain, Caldwell moved to New Zealand with her husband David in 1950 and raised her family there. Her three sons forged their motorsport interests in the country, although it wasn’t until relocating back to England that Alastair started his career at the Bruce McLaren-founded McLaren team.

Dorothy is survived by Alastair, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
