Without doubt, Terry Harryman’s career was exceptional – spanning 40 years, multiple continents and reaching the top step of the WRC podium six times.
But what’s clear from the outpouring of emotion since Terry’s sad passing on Monday is it wasn’t what he achieved, but how he achieved them, that marked him out.
DirtFish’s David Evans spoke to Terry’s son Allan, and the driver he won his WRC events alongside Ari Vatanen, for a heartfelt edition of SPIN, The Rally Pod to remember Terry.
“He was my faithful partner,” said Vatanen. “We are very different characters, our natures are very different, so we made a very strong couple because one person in the car has to be sensible, and it’s not me!
“Of course he had a very nice spot of witty humor in his soft spoken style, and suddenly he would say something hilarious. There were various sayings he had.
“Terry was very much a thinking man, a reliable person who you could count on. He was very easy to approach and like a father figure to many aspiring drivers. We won a lot, we lost a lot, so that was a real intense and meaningful life lived in a career.”
