Behind-the-scenes of McRae’s first season without Subaru

VHS Rallies has saved a documentary recounting the early days of McRae's shock switch to Ford

Colin McRae’s move from Subaru to Ford shocked the World Rally Championship-watching public to its very core in 1999. Nobody really saw it coming. Nobody thought the top Scot could – or would – ever be seen outside the blue and yellow overalls.

Then it happened.

In 1999, he wore the red, white and blue of the Martini-backed Ford World Rally Team and slid behind the wheel of a Ford Focus WRC.

VHS Rallies delivers a fascinating look behind that first season, with the early rounds despatched quickly before a focus on that year’s Rally GB. Lanark’s finest was after redemption following Richard Burns’ first win at home 12 months earlier. Prior to that, Britain’s woods had been firm McRae territory.

This programme follows McRae from the hotel car park on the first morning to a six right over crest in Myherin…

VHS Rallies is an unofficial, unapproved project to save old TV rally reports and footage from decaying VHS tapes before they deteriorate beyond the point of no return. Several hundred hours of material have already been saved and some highlights are shared on youtube.com/c/vhsrallies. VHS Rallies is always keen to find new material, so if you have old tapes you think might be of interest, you can contact the project at Facebook on fb.me/sidewayssaved or via Twitter at twitter.com/vhsrallies.
