Breen gets same 10s hybrid penalty as Tänak

Craig Breen has retired from Friday anyway so the penalty makes little difference to his rally

Craig Breen has been hit with the same 10-second penalty as Ott Tänak for failing to put his Ford Puma Rally1 in electric mode in a designated electric-only zone on Rally Estonia.

The M-Sport driver had already retired from Friday’s running after crashing out on the fourth stage of the day, but he’s now been hit with more bad news after receiving the penalty on return to the service area.

When discussing the matter with the stewards, Breen’s co-driver Paul Nagle explained that they had forgotten to switch driving modes.

With there being no technical or mechanical reason for the failure of deploying the all-electric mode, the stewards agreed to hand Breen a 10s time penalty.

The penalty will be applied to Breen’s time when he restarts under superrally rules on Saturday morning.
