Elfyn Evans has crashed out of Secto Rally Finland on the penultimate stage.
After a difficult Saturday where he finished outside the top 10 because of a broken driveshaft, Evans was on the hunt for strong Super Sunday points on the final day, attempting to mitigate the damage to rival Thierry Neuville in the World Rally Championship title race.
Evans was second in those standings, 1.2 seconds adrift of rally-leading team-mate Kalle Rovanperä, but he crashed very early on in SS19.
The Welshman’s Toyota appeared to snap through the first corner and he ran wide, losing the rear and drifting across to the other side of the road where he hit a tree.
It’s a major blow to Evans’ title chances, as he was already 15 points adrift of Neuville prior to Rally Finland and is set to score no points.
