Jari-Matti Latvala withdrew his Toyota Yaris WRC from Friday’s final Rally Sweden stage so the team could investigate the car’s issues.
After losing time with a spin on the day’s second stage, Latvala then tumbled nearly two and a half minutes away from the frontrunners when the car began cutting out through the final stage of the morning loop.
Toyota team principal Tommi Mäkinen explained the issue to DirtFish, saying: “We have found an impact on the data. There was an impact from a stone or something like that underneath the car on the sumpguard and 200 meters after that we have seen the engine is starting to cut [out].
“We didn’t investigate yet, but we are looking now.
“It’s better not to start the final stage, better to bring the car to here in case it stops [on the stage].
“We don’t know what has happened because normally we had some bigger impacts under the car.”
Rally Sweden is the first event in Latvala’s 2020 part-time program in a self-entered Toyota after losing his place in the works team.
