Inspired by Derek Dauncey’s tales of Mitsubishi’s Safari Rally heroics in the 1990s, DirtFish asked SPIN, The Rally Pod regular George Donaldson to lift the lid on an even more demanding era in the event’s history.

Starting in the 1980s, his stint in a lead role at Toyota came when the manufacturer took the Safari incredibly seriously – with weeks-long recces, specialized development programs and team personnel including Donaldson spending as much as six months of the year in Kenya.
