DirtFish has learned that next month’s Rally Argentina World Rally Championship round will be postponed or canceled – with an announcement expected on Thursday afternoon.

The FIA and WRC Promoter have been in discussions with the organiser of the Villa Carlos Paz-based event for the last two days, following the news that Argentina had imposed a ban on sporting events for the next month due to the spread of the coronavirus.

This development follows the announcement on Wednesday that Argentina’s MotoGP round at Termas de Río Hondo, which was due to take place one week before Rally Argentina, has also been postponed.

A source in the service park at Rally México told DirtFish: “It’s a little bit inevitable that this decision was coming. Nobody knows what’s coming next with this thing. The wider question is where do we go after that?

“It’s maybe too early to talk about Portugal, but Sardinia? It’s tough to think to the people going through Italy right now. Maybe we take the long holiday and come back the other side in Finland.”

There has been no official comment from Rally Argentina, the FIA or WRC Promoter, but confirmation of the decision is expected imminently.
