Kalle Rovanperä and Takamoto Katsuta both reitred on what proved to be a disastrous Acropolis Rally Greece stage for Toyota.
Rovanperä had been eighth and Katsuta fifth heading into the Saturday afternoon loop, but neither would make it to the end of the first stage of the loop – Pavliani 2.
Rovanperä was the first to hit trouble, as he overshot a corner and got stuck in what appeared to be a strange incident.
The help of spectators allowed the GR Yaris Rally1 to return to the stage, but translated (from Finnish) chat-back from the crew to the team in the service park suggested Rovanperä had encountered a brake issue.
The two-time champion crawled along the test before eventually electing to park his car up.
Rovanperä could lose valuable ground in the championship after his Saturday retirement
Katsuta meanwhile made it through all-but three of the corners of the 15-mile stage – running too deep and beaching his Toyota on the edge of the road.
Despite his best efforts, the car was stuck and he was also forced out.
The two retirements did little to shake up the leaderboard, other than to help Thierry Neuville climb into the top-five.
Ott Tänak continues to lead the way by 35.7s over Sébastien Ogier, with Adrien Fourmaux in third.
Josh McErlean ran into the same handbrake problem that M-Sport team-mate Grégoire Munster did in the morning – while Munster was affected again with the problem not rectified in service.
