Kalle Rovanperä crashed out of the lead of Secto Rally Finland right at the end of the penultimate stage.
The world champion had looked set to end his wait for a home Rally Finland win, comfortably leading the rally from team-mate Sébastien Ogier.
But a rock in the line of a medium-speed left-hander left Rovanperä powerless to avoid his fate, as his Toyota was sent off-line and into the trees on the outside of the corner.
Both members of the crew are OK.
Team-mate Elfyn Evans also crashed at the very first corner of the same stage, retiring on the spot.
Toyota does still lead the rally as Ogier now heads the classification by 42.5 seconds over Thierry Neuville.
