Tom Fowler: Insight into Toyota’s WRC operation

Toyota's technical director joins SPIN, The Rally Pod for a deep-dive into Toyota's present, and his own career in the WRC

SPIN, The Rally Pod comes to you from Jyväskylä, Finland this week as we welcome Toyota technical director Tom Fowler onto the podcast.

Sitting down with David Evans for the next hour and a half, no topic is off limits as Fowler talks Elfyn Evans’ supreme start to 2025, Kalle Rovanperä’s early struggles and what Toyota understands so far about Hankook’s tires.

He also touches on Toyota’s evolution as an operation since it rejoined the World Rally Championship in 2017 and just what that last-gasp manufacturers’ title meant to both the team, and him, personally last year.

“At least personally, I didn’t accept we were ever going to lose that,” Fowler shared.

Elsewhere, Fowler gives his thoughts on Hyundai’s updated i20 and the “options” Toyota has to improve its GR Yaris Rally1, and delves into stories from his past including how a trip along England’s M50 motorway fostered his love for rallying, his brief stint working outside the sport and what that taught him, and why a ride with Elfyn’s father Gwyndaf Evans taught him his career was never going to be behind the wheel.
