Was Lappi ever going to win Rally México?

From leading Rally México on Friday to crashing on Saturday, we were left wondering what could have been for Lappi

Esapekka Lappi’s Rally México was a real contrast.

From the highest of highs, leading record-holding México winner Sébastien Ogier on merit overnight on Friday, to the lowest of lows as it all came undone on Saturday’s first speed test, Hyundai team principal Cyril Abiteboul acknowledged that Lappi went from the best day of his career to his worst.

But did Lappi ever stand a chance of winning? Had he not crashed out and wiped out a power line, did he have it in him to defeat Ogier? Or was this always going to be Ogier’s rally?

Check out this week’s post Rally México edition of SPIN, The Rally Pod to find out the thoughts of Colin Clark, George Donaldson and Luke Barry on this and many more topics besides including Ogier’s sensational form, where Ott Tänak finds himself and the battle in WRC2.
