What to expect from Acropolis’ service station stage

We explored the unusual location for the rally's new superspecial stage

Pulling into a service station isn’t exactly out of the ordinary. On any long drive, a comfort break or pause for refreshments is simply expected.

Thierry Neuville, Sébastien Ogier and co. have been there too. But they’ve never yanked the handbrake and chucked a Rally1 car down the slip-road and into a donut around the roundabout.

Or so we think!

That all changes on Saturday, with the introduction of the EKO SSS to this year’s Acropolis Rally of Greece schedule.

Spectator-friendly showpiece stages are commonplace in the World Rally Championship, and the world’s best rally drivers are not immune to competing in some rather unusual occasions. A trotting track, the beachfront, stadiums and even a car plant, the WRC has done them all in years gone by.

But a service station? That’s all-new.

Ahead of the WRC’s trip into the unknown later this weekend, we had a look around this atypical stage and the challenge the 1.2-mile stage will present.
