Kevin Abbring will return to rallycross for a full season in 2020, competing in the European Supercar championship for GC Kompetition.

The former World Rally Championship star will drive a Renault Clio for the French squad, with the car having undergone extensive redevelopment in-house over the winter. He has already started testing the car, getting behind the wheel at Lousada in Portugal this week.

“I’m very please to be working with GCK from 2020 onwards in Euro RX,” Abbring said. “GCK is not only a team with arguably the biggest potential, it’s also a team with extremely experienced and motivated people, with whom I worked with closely in the past.

“Joining GCK offers me the opportunity to fight for a championship again and that’s my key focus! I have a lot of respect for Guerlain and the team and I am proud to be a part of GCK.”

Abbring made his rallycross debut last year, driving the ES Motorsport Skoda Fabia in Norway and Sweden in the World Championship.

Abbring impressed right away, despite his lack of experience, leading comfortably for four of the six laps in the final in Hell and finishing fourth after taking a late joker. He backed that up with another fourth place at Holjes, making the most of a puncture for eventual champion Timmy Hansen to move up the order late-on.

He previously spent three years driving for Hyundai in the WRC, taking a best finish of seventh in Spain in 2016. His most recent rally victory came in the 2017 Ypres rally driving a Peugeot 208 R5.
