Henning Solberg and step-son Pontus Tidemand will team up in rallycross next weekend and drive for Hedströms Motorsport at the ‘All Star’ Magic Weekend at Höljes.
Solberg, a former World Rally Championship driver, will compete in the Legends class while Tidemand, the 2017 WRC2 Champion and a Euro RX regular last year, will compete in the Supercar category. Both will drive Volkswagen Polo Supercars.
“I’m really excited to get going, and where better than at Höljes up against some old mates and rivals back in the day,” said Solberg, who has made 14 World RX appearances in the past, reaching two finals.
“For me personally, it’ll be so much fun going up against the likes of Marcus [Grönholm], Andreas [Eriksson], ‘Stecka’ [Stig-Olov Walfridson] and Per [Eklund]. I can’t believe Per is back again at the age of 74 – that is proper legend status!
“It’ll also be quite an experience to race Marcus wheel-to-wheel after so many years of following each other’s split times on the rally stages. I can’t wait to get to the track.”
Tidemand, like Solberg, is better known as a rally driver but has a wealth of rallycross experience.
He drove for Mattias Ekström’s’s EKS squad in 2014 – and will be looking to put that experience to good use in a field that includes double World Champion Johan Kristoffersson, event winner Niclas Grönholm, old Euro RX sparring partner Robin Larsson and cousin Oliver Solberg.
“It’ll be great to climb back into a rallycross Supercar for the ‘All Star’ Magic Weekend,” he said. “It’s been a while but you never forget the feeling of that raw power and 600bhp sitting underneath you on the start-line.
“I’m really pumped to get back on track after the season was so abruptly stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, and I’m certainly going to have my work cut out looking at the Supercar entry list.
“I have a great team behind me and the Polo is a proven package, so I know I have the equipment to do the job – and win or lose, it’s going to be a huge amount of fun!”
