Rallying’s fast and famous donate to COVID-19 relief auction

What once belonged to WRC and World RX stars could now be yours

Hyundai Spain

It’s not often you can proudly display the rear wing of Hyundai’s i20 Coupe WRC challenger in your home and feel content that you’ve helped somebody other than yourself.

But thanks to the FIA and auction house RM Sotheby’s, that’s exactly what one lucky person will be doing very soon after they’ve bought it at the online-only #RaceAgainstCOVID auction.

The sale – which began this Monday and ends a week later – is raising money for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as it tackles the coronavirus pandemic head-on and provides global aid to those that need it.

Several money-can’t-buy experiences and memorabilia are being auctioned from the great and the good of motorsport, including FIA President Jean Todt putting up some paintings reflecting his time at the helm of Ferrari’s Formula 1 team.

But what’s of most interest to DirtFish readers are the rallying and rallycross bits, and they don’t disappoint.

Alongside the wing from last year’s Hyundai, the spoiler from Citroën’s C3 WRC test car is also available to buy as is the front bumper belonging to Peugeot’s 208 World Rallycross Championship campaigner from 2018.

Sebastien Loeb and Timmy Hansen

Toyota Gazoo Racing is offering an assorted WRC memorabilia package which includes a front bumper from its Yaris WRC as well as Ott Tänak’s nomex fireproof top from his title-winning season. This comes alongside a load of goodies from Toyota’s racing division too.

A signed 2020 race suit from Sébastien Ogier is up for grabs while his and co-driver Julien Ingrassia’s 2016 helmet plus Ingrassia’s race suit can be won courtesy of Volkswagen Motorsport.

Signed race suits are also available from Dakar Rally winner Jutta Kleindschmidt – which is complemented with a book – and double World Rally Champion Miki Biasion, whose title-winning 1988 Lancia attire is available in replica form.

RM Sotheby’s European head, Maarten ten Holder, said: “Members of the global motorsport family are uniting to help raise funds that will be used to fight the spread of COVID-19.

“These new additions to the #RaceAgainstCovid Auction are incredibly rare and offer the highest bidders the opportunity to own pieces of motorsport history and in some cases, experience it for themselves first-hand.

“The FIA’s incredible contribution to bring the global motorsport community together cannot be underestimated and we are excited to play our part in helping to raise funds for the IFRC.”
