This is the livery for Pastrana’s Gymkhana Subaru

Stars, stripes, and plenty of plaid – Travis Pastrana's 'no restrictions' Gymkhana car will have a bold look

Travis Pastrana’s bespoke Gymkhana Subaru WRX STI will have a striking look when the action sports legend takes over the popular viral video series later this year.

Already shown in bare carbonfiber form last week, the custom-built machine’s wrap that it will sport in the upcoming video has now also been revealed by Hoonigan.

An American icon with an affinity for plaid patterns, that’s all reflected in the car’s eye-catching design. The yellow from Pastrana’s ARA rally car also creeps in on the Method Race Wheels – the Yokohamas that surround them also have their own unique ‘Stars and Stripes’ design, too.

The radical design was the result of a collaboration between Pastrana and Hoonigan’s chief creative officer Brian Scotto, who also serves as creative director for the Gymkhana video series.

As well as the livery, a few more details about the Vermont SportsCar-built machine have also been revealed.

Much like the car itself, the engine that powers it is fully bespoke. The 2.3-liter boxer has a billet block and a completely sealed carbon flat-bottom undertray.

Pastrana will also make use of a range of different road-going Yokohama tire options, and steering wheel-activated active aero elements.

“This STI is unbelievable!,” said Pastrana. “We’ve never had the opportunity to do this before, to build a car with no restrictions.

“Engine, suspension, aero – everything is unlimited, clean sheet. It’s crazy fast, easy to control and get sideways and it was perfect out of the box in testing.

“Gymkhana is a new challenge for me but I want to raise the bar, and this is the car to do it.”

The 11th Gymkhana video will be the first since 2009’s Gymkhana Two to feature a Subaru, and the first ever to have a driver other than Ken Block in the starring role.

It won’t be the first appearance for Pastrana though, who made a cameo riding a motocross bike in Gymkhana Five, and another brief appearance at the end of Gymkhana 10, teasing his involvement in this upcoming instalment.
