February in Northern Europe.
It’s grey, it’s cold, it’s windy and it’s damp.
So to warm up those of us still struggling through the depths of winter as the World Rally Championship gets ready to head to its coldest event – Rally Sweden – here’s a Picture of the Week entry from a rally that used to be one of the warmest.
It’s Rally Turkey 2019, and the cars are at the beach. Sort of.
Here, Sébastien Ogier takes on Turkey’s rough roads with the beautiful waterfront of the Turkish Riviera as a backdrop, en route to what would be his final win in Citroën colors.
Temperatures got up to 36 degrees Celsius (97°F) in the Marmaris service park that weekend, and I can feel that summer warmth radiating through my computer screen from this brilliant snap.
The WRC hasn’t returned to Turkey since 2019, with neighboring country Greece instead picking up a slot on the calendar from 2021 onwards.
Still, thanks to the Girardo & Co. Archive, we can marvel at some of the postcard-perfect pictures that Rally Turkey produced and dream of watching rally cars by the beach in the summer while sheltering from the freezing cold of winter.
