Škoda’s new Fabia RS Rally2 will make its long awaited competition debut on the Lausitz Rallye in Germany next week with Andreas Mikkelsen behind the wheel.
The Fabia RS Rally2 is a brand-new machine for rallying’s second tier and has been tested extensively by Mikkelsen, five-time World Rally Championship winner Kris Meeke, Škoda legend Jan Kopecký and WRC2 title contender Emil Lindholm.
Revealed to the public in June, the car was expected to make its debut all the way back on August’s Rally Finland but production issues forced Škoda to adjust those plans.
Back in September, Škoda Motorsport boss Michal Hrabanek hinted to DirtFish that the Fabia RS Rally2 could make its debut in “the Czech or German championship or even a small event in Italy – it doesn’t matter.
“Like I said, most important is that we have everything ready and we have the parts to support the cars we sell.”
Toksport has taken delivery of the first car and its lead driver Mikkelsen will perform driving duties alongside regular co-driver Torstein Eriksen.
It will be the first rally Mikkelsen – who is firmly linked to a Hyundai Motorsport drive in the WRC next season – has done since his WRC2 season ended in disappointment with just a seventh place finish on the Acropolis after a collision into the barriers on the opening superspecial stage.
