WRT Rally1 Spain, the newly announced entrant for the World Rally Championship’s next set of technical regulations, will not contest the full 2027 season.

A co-operation between car builder RMC Motorsport and the Spanish national motorsport federation RFEDA to launch a new top-level team was announced on Thursday, just before the start of Rally Islas Canarias.

The 2027 season is expected to begin with Monte Carlo in its traditional late-January slot, meaning RMC has only nine months to go from project unveiling to the start line of the season opener.

Regardless of whether it makes the season start or not, RFEDA technical director Fernando Álvarez confirmed the team will only be part-time next season before shifting to a full program in 2028.

“The plan at this moment is to be able to compete in at least half the WRC season in 2027,” said Álvarez. “After that, for 2028, the aim is to be able to make the whole program of the WRC championship.

“We don’t know at this moment if it is going to be possible to have the chance to compete in Monte Carlo.”

WRT Rally1 Spain will be a constructor, rather than a manufacturer. That means it’s currently looking for a powertrain partner in the Rally2 ranks to propel its prototype.

“The design of the car has already started and for the engine, we are in discussion with a current factory team involved with a Rally2 car,” said Àlvarez.

RMC currently hopes to have its first prototype rolling out of its facilities in Northern Spain by October.
