Podcast: WRC driver moves we wish happened

The team ponder the great driver storylines that never quite materialized on this week's SPIN, The Rally Pod

Acropolis Rally Athens (GR) 28-31 05 1984

Who doesn’t love a driver move in the World Rally Championship? The intrigue of how somebody will perform in new colors, and how their arrival might impact their new team-mates, is always a fascinating subplot to the start of any season.

In 2024, Ott Tänak will provide that buzz courtesy of his move back to Hyundai.

But that, as ever, got us thinking. What if Walter Röhrl moved to Audi in 1981 instead of 1984? How different would Henri Toivonen’s career have been if he joined Peugeot? Would Sébastien Loeb still be a nine-time world champion if he’d gone to Ford for 2006? And what would have happened if Kris Meeke and Elfyn Evans became team-mates at M-Sport?

On this week’s SPIN, The Rally Pod, we’ve fully embraced our creative side and pondered over the WRC driver moves we wish had happened. Whether they were close to happening but didn’t quite, or were never on the cards but are fun to wonder about, David Evans, George Donaldson, Luke Barry and host Lisa O’Sullivan have discussed them this week!

And there’s more than a few good stories from a certain Mr Donaldson about moves that very nearly did happen…

Let us know what you make of our selections, and which WRC driver moves you would have loved to have seen in the comments below.
