The next Loeb record Ogier could break

The eight-time World Rally champion is all but confirmed to take part in June's Rally Italy in Sardinia

Sébastien Ogier has a habit of breaking records this season.

First, he edged ahead of Sébastien Loeb as the all-time record winner of the Monte Carlo Rally. Then he did the same thing on Rally México two months later.

Now it seems as if Ogier is gunning for the hat-trick, as the World Rally Championship leader is expected to next compete on June’s Rally Italy after missing next month’s Rally Portugal.

And Sardinia, coincidentally, is another event Ogier currently jointly holds the record number of wins for with Loeb.

Barring any major mishaps for this year’s title contenders in Portugal, Ogier should be well placed to claim the record for himself as fifth-placed Thierry Neuville is just 11 points off the points lead, meaning Ogier’s likely to start Friday’s opening leg with a good road position.

His entry into round six isn’t official, but he as good as confirmed it when speaking to DirtFish in Croatia.

“I would like to say… I mean it’s everybody’s guess,” Ogier said when asked what his next rally will be.

“The probability is strong that I’ll be in Sardinia. So, I’m not sure when the confirmation is coming.

“It’s not coming from my side. So hopefully you have it soon.”

Ogier has 14 previous starts in Sardinia, with one previous win for his current employer Toyota in his last championship season – 2021.

Ogier’s other Sardinian successes came with Volkswagen as he won the rally three years in a row from 2013-15.
