Video: Rally drivers’ message to motorsport fans

DirtFish rounded up some of the biggest names to urge fans to stay safe and healthy during the coronavirus pandemic

Some of the biggest names in rallying have come together to produce a DirtFish video urging the world to stay safe and healthy through the current coronavirus pandemic.

World champions Petter Solberg and Ott Tänak lead an all-star cast including rallying heroes from both sides of the Atlantic. The idea was a simple one, to bring as many voices together as we could to deliver a key message.

So, from the snows of Park City, Utah to the Mediterranean sunshine of Monaco, drivers and co-drivers came together to say what? Teemu Suninen?

“Stay home. Stay safe.”

The starkness of the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team driver’s message came in contrast to Travis Pastrana’s request to return to rallying in an effort to avoid, “Getting my butt kicked by a bunch of 12-year-olds.”

Suninen’s fellow flying Finn Kalle Rovanperä was similarly brief, but his co-driver takes the award for the coolest possible backdrop for his piece to camera. Jonne Halttunen’s daily exercise involves a walking-speed recce of the opening stage of this year’s Rally Finland, Harju.

Bringing drivers together virtually and outside of the service park meant they were free to take their own decisions on what to wear. And how to do their hair.

Former F1 racer Scott Speed called it. “One of the smaller benefits of this current trying time is that you don’t have to do your hair!”

Lengthening locks is something we’re all going to have to face in these barber-free days, which have grounded hairdressers around the world. But what to do? One answer is to follow the example our very own Colin Clark demonstrates at the end of the video.

It’s not for everybody. Certainly not the likes of Thierry Neuville and Craig Breen, who show off a couple of the tidiest barnets.

The best advice? Do what Ott does. Find the coolest cap in the service park and put that on your head.

Next up? Follow Petter Solberg back inside and stay tuned to DirtFish.
