Mattias Ekström will stay with Joel Christoffersson’s KYB Team JC for the next two World Rallycross Championship rounds at Kuovola this weekend.
The 2016 World RX Champion was a late entry to the opening rounds of the delayed 2020 season at Höljes, teaming up with the JC RaceTeknik run outfit alongside full-season driver Robin Larsson.
Ekström had teased his participation in the Finnish double header – the second such round in eight days – following his first event victory since Buxtehude in 2017.
“The idea from the beginning was that Mattias’ entry would only be a one-off for Höljes, but now we have the opportunity to continue the cooperation in Finland too,” team boss Christoffersson said.
“Mattias is very important in KYB Team JC, so getting him to race in the next two rounds feels really nice, both for Robin’s sake and the whole team.
“We go to Finland with a victory and a second place in the bag, and a nice lead in the Teams’ Championship.
“We’ve all got the taste for that now, and the goal is to continue fighting for points in in both the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships.”
Kuovola returns to the World RX calendar for the first time since 2015, with Ekström set to get his first taste of the Finnish track, having only competed in a partial season that year while dovetailing his DTM career.
“It’s exciting to drive with KYB Team JC again in Finland,” Ekström said.
“I’ve never been there and raced before, so I do not know what to expect from the track. But I look forward to another fantastic weekend with the team and go there with the same attitude as to Höljes – to do my best together with a good team.”
Ekström is currently second in the World RX standings, while KYB Team JC top the Teams’ table.
