It takes something quite extraordinary to achieve something unique in a championship that’s now 70 years old.
But that’s what Hayden Paddon and John Kennard have done – becoming the first non Europeans to win the European Rally Championship on last weekend’s Barum Rally Zlín.
After a season where they refused to budge from the podium, a far more chaotic run in Czech Republic raised the tension as they retired after ripping a wheel enough, but that still ended up being enough for the Kiwis to secure the title one round early.
The first non-European to win he may be, but Paddon is not the first World Rally Championship event winner to conquer the ERC. Far from it!
Over the years two different drivers have won both the ERC and WRC titles, while a further 11 have won the European championship but also rallies at world level.
To spice up your Monday, we’ve set you a challenge: can you name all 13 drivers to have won a rally (or rallies) in the WRC but also been European champion?
