Sordo gets MRF seat that was Breen’s for Azores ERC round

Three-time WRC event winner will take over development work for tire firm on fifth 2021 ERC round later this month

Hyundai Motorsport driver Dani Sordo will pilot MRF Tyres’ European Rally Championship entry on next weekend’s Azores Rally.

The MRF Hyundai i20 R5 was driven by Craig Breen throughout 2020 and on the first three rounds of the 2021 season, but was driven by Jari Huttunen on Barum Rally Zlín at the end of August.

Sordo, who is currently preparing for his first WRC start with Cándido Carrera in Greece this week, will take over the MRF entry for the Portuguese island round. It will mark his first ERC start since he finished third on Rally Zlín in 2018.

“I am really excited to do the Azores Rally with Team MRF Tyres and the Hyundai i20 R5,” said Sordo.

“The Azores Rally is an amazing rally to drive. I will give a lot of information for the tires. We will use this rally as a test for the development of MRF Tyres.”

Despite Sordo’s vast experience, the Azores will be a new rally for the three-time World Rally Championship event winner. It is round five of this season’s ERC, which is currently led by Andreas Mikkelsen.

Although the rally’s entry list is yet to be published, DirtFish understands that Mikkelsen will compete with Gus Greensmith’s former co-driver Elliott Edmondson on the Azores. The pair will team up for the first time on the Acropolis Rally this weekend.
