Dani Sordo is a target for the newly unveiled WRT Rally1 Spain outfit, having been highlighted by Spanish federation president Manuel Aviñó as one of several drivers it has interest in.

As its name suggests, the team – using vehicles designed and built by Spanish tuner RMC Motorsport – will have a distinctly Spanish flavor, and that extends to its driver lineup.

Asked which drivers were on the team’s radar for 2027, Aviñó replied: “It is very early to answer that question but Spain, we have many good drivers on the table.

“One of them at the moment is racing in Hyundai,” he said.

The only Spanish driver in Hyundai’s factory lineup is Dani Sordo.

“At the moment our priority is to develop the car and we will see about the drivers. It is not yet decided,” Aviñó added.

“Fortunately there is plenty of good drivers in Spain. We are really proud of what we have achieved with [Jan] Solans, with [Efrén] Llarena, now with Alejandro Cachón. We have very good drivers at the moment.”

Development driver already in place

RMC Motorsport’s prototype WRC27 machine will be driven by Javier Villa, the former GP2 Series single-seater driver who switched to rallying four years ago, during its development cycle

Villa will conduct the bulk of testing mileage once the first prototype rolls out, which is currently expected to take place in October. But that’s only after RMC owner Roberto Mendez – once a factory driver for both Mitsubishi and Ford’s Spanish importer teams – conducts the initial kilometers.
