Three-time world rally winner Andreas Mikkelsen is closing on a deal to drive the last two rounds of this year’s World Rally Championship.

After a 10-month wait since his last competitive event at Monza Rally Show last year, Mikkelsen is talking to Škoda about a possible return to a Fabia for Ypres Rally before potentially piecing together an agreement to drive a Pirelli-liveried Citroën C3 WRC at the Italian tire firm’s home rally at Monza.

Mikkelsen tested Škoda’s latest specification Fabia Rally2 evo in Belgium recently and is keen to be back with the Czech firm with whom he starred to finish seventh overall in Monte Carlo and Corsica at the top of the 2017 season.

“I have been talking to Škoda about Ypres,” Mikkelsen told DirtFish. “I would really like to do it – like I’d really like to do Monza as well, but nothing is decided yet.

“I drove the Škoda as part of a development test recently. They wanted me to give my feedback on the car and it was very good.

“I’m doing Hungary in the ERC, which is a good way to keep fit [for the WRC].”

Mikkelsen has spent this season working with Pirelli to develop the Milanese firm’s tires in time for the first of four years as a control tire supplier next year.

“Doing Monza with Pirelli is something we’ve been talking about,” said Mikkelsen. “It would make sense, it’s Pirelli’s home rally. It could be fantastic to take that car and those tires to the last round of this year’s WRC.”

Mikkelsen’s Rally Hungary (November 6-8) entry comes in a Topp-Cars Rally Team-run Fabia Rally2 evo and reunites him with former co-driver Ola Fløene.
